Hiring  Candidates with “History” – Why everyone should do it!

Presented by: Will Rikard

More and more companies are moving away from criminal background checks and drug testing, as there is more awareness on how these policies can discriminate and eliminate good candidates from the hiring process, especially during a tight labor market. Human Resources professionals and business leaders have a lot of power and influence when it comes to hiring. Hiring decisions have consequences on individuals, families and communities. Understanding and putting into practice, policies that take into account statistical data on incarceration and other factors, will not only create fair and equitable hiring practices, it can transform a community and improve business performance.

Will Rikard is the Executive Director of StepUp Wilmington (formerly Phoenix Employment Ministry & Phoenix Hometown Hires), a local non-profit organization that trains and places individuals with barriers to employment into jobs. During his tenure, StepUp Wilmington has grown to an organization with 14 employees that places over 200 people a year into jobs.  Will is a graduate of Wake Forest University, where he received his degree in Communications, played baseball and was the starting left fielder on the 1998 ACC championship team. After college Will played 5 seasons of professional baseball in Germany and Sweden and later earned his MBA from American University in Washington, DC. Before relocating to Wilmington in 2012, Will worked for two recruitment companies in Washington, DC and Stockholm, Sweden. Will has extensive experience leading and hiring in multi-cultural environments.
