Social Media Awareness

with LKNHR Board Member, Stacy Wood from Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein

Program valid for 1 PDC for SHRM-CP and HRCI recertification!

As the internet - and instant access to information - has become part of our everyday lives, many individuals don't hesitate to tweet daily activities, post funny zingers on Facebook, or "Google" to gather information.

The instinct is common and understandable, but it can lead to a number of problems that may not be readily apparent. Employers' policies and actions related to the internet and social media monitoring can sometimes run afoul of employment laws. This presentation covers the following topics for employers:

  1. Use of internet searches during the hiring process
  2. Monitoring employee use of social media
  3. Benefits of social media policies
  4. Role of social media in termination decisions
  5. Legal implications including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and discoverability issues

About Our Speaker:

Stacy Wood is a Partner in the Employment & Labor group of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein.  She has been defending employers and educational institutions successfully for more than 25 years, with a focus on discrimination, harassment, and ERISA litigation. As a solution-oriented and pragmatic adviser, she is a problem solver for manufacturing businesses and service providers of all sizes, in addition to private colleges, universities, and K-12 schools throughout North Carolina and South Carolina.  Stacy works with clients in a partnership offering guidance and a practical approach to achieving their goals in a timely and cost-effective manner. She enables her clients to focus on running their businesses while managing their legal issues, whether it involves counseling through a sensitive FMLA/ADA situation, drafting an underperforming executive’s termination agreement, or defending against a volatile sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit.
