Cultural Effectiveness in the 21st Century and the Transgender Community

This presentation will examine diversity with a view towards effective HR management in 21st century with respect to transgender employees and their families. This presentation will review substantive and cultural effectiveness and current changes in paradigms and terminology, as well as provide insights and sensitivities HR managers can use to more effectively counsel with employees. Paula Kohut, a transgender woman who practices law in Wilmington, North Carolina will discuss diversity, implicit bias and cultural effectiveness from personal and professional perspectives.


Paula A. Kohut is a shareholder in Kohut & Adams, PA in Wilmington, North Carolina. Her principal practice areas are estate planning, trust and estate administration, business law and asset protection. Paula is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. She received her B.A. degree, from the University of California at Irvine in 1980 and her J.D. degree, with honors, from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1983. She is a Council Member of the Estate and Fiduciary Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. She also serves on the Boards of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys, Equality NC, Coastal Women Attorneys and St. Jude’s Wilmington Foundation, Inc.
