Learning Agility: What is It? Why is it Important?

Learning agility is one of the hottest topics in the talent management space. Many people have attempted to define it and few, if any, people have been able to measure it. Dave Hoff and Warner Burke have spent the last 40 years working on leadership and employee development. Six years ago, Warner indicated to Dave that he thought he could measure learning agility. Dave told Warner if he could measure it his firm, EASI•Consult, would like to represent it. The presentation will cover Burke’s research on learning agility, his development of a set of questions to measure learning agility and how that test(s) is being applied throughout human resources.

Learning Objectives: 1) How to define learning agility; 2) Know the difference between learning agility and ability; 3) Know the role that skill, motivation and defensiveness play in learning agility; 4) Know the 9 dimensions of learning agility as defined by Dr. Warner Burke at Columbia University; 5) Understand how learning agility can be measured in the Burke Learning Agility Inventory Self Report and 360° Burke Learning Agility Survey; 6) Understand how learning agility can be used in a) selection; b) orientation; c) leadership development; d) performance management; e) individual assessment for selection and development; f) succession planning; g) organization development


David Hoff, M.Ed. is Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Leadership Development and one of two Principals at EASI•Consult®. He has been at EASI•Consult since 2003. David leads organization transformation projects for private sector companies and large public-sector agencies of the Federal government. These large-scale interventions often combine both the assessment and development disciplines of EASI•Consult. David works with different applications of competencies for a variety of public and private sector organizations. His work with competencies began in the 1970’s while he was part of McBer and Company. David spent 17 years at Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. in St. Louis as Director of International Human Resources, Director of Human Resource Development and Selection, Manager of Management Development and Training and Organization Development Consultant. As Director of International Human Resources, he started the function from scratch as Anheuser-Busch was making a major expansion internationally into Europe, Asia and Latin America. He's held corporate positions such as Vice President of Human Resources for Dimension Data, Inc. and Director and Managing Director of International Human Resources for Proxicom, Inc. At Proxicom, he started an International Human Resource function in Europe. Proxicom was the fourth company Dimension Data bought in North America. David was appointed Vice President of Human Resources in North America with the mission of integrating the human resource functions of the legacy companies. In addition to a deep background in management and organization development, David has 10 years of international experience in Asia, Latin America and Europe. David has over 25 years of experience in the identification and application of competencies, starting in the late 70's working with David McClelland at McBer and Company (now Hay) in Boston. Some of the organizations David has worked with while at EASI•Consult include: General Services Administration, Dept. of Defense Polygraph Institute, Federal Reserve Board of Governors, NASA, Office of Personnel Management, Hewlett Packard, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Live Oak Bank, U.S. Gypsum, Middleburg Bank, Acme Fish Company and U.S. Army Energy Research Development Center. David holds a B.A. in History and Education from Alfred University. He holds an M.A. and M.Ed. from Columbia University. He serves on the Alumni Council at Teachers College, Columbia University. Twice a month he writes a column on human resource issues for the Wilmington Business Journal. He and Warner Burke are collaborating on a book, Developing Learning Agility. David and his wife, Susan, live in Wilmington, North Carolina and have three adult sons.
